Stains of any kind can be a bear to remove, and cause anguish if it's a favorite item. Here are some tips on effective stain removal. One general rule of thumb: clean a stain first in cool water, then wash it properly in warm.
Important: make sure to read fabric labels for specialized treatment.

type of stain cleaning method
Juice/Wine Cover the stain with salt. Then pour cold water or seltzer over it. Or, use a mixture of detergent, vinegar (white) and water.
Coffee or Tea Blot the fabric, gently removing as much of the liquid as possible. Then, either pour boiling water through the cloth, or clean it with a mixture of detergent, white vinegar, and water. Follow up with dry cleaning if necessary.
Chocolate Remove as much as possible from the fabric. Then, use cold water and wash with detergent (preferably Woolite or the like). You may need bleach later if it's a white fabric.
Salad Dressing Apply seltzer and then launder appropriately.
Ketchup Pour boiling water through or use detergent.
Egg As with dishes, apply cold water, and then wash in cold water. Avoid hot water: it can make the stain permanent.
Ink Suggestions range from paint thinner to hair spray. The safest route is probably to use detergent, and clean both sides of the material if it's gone all the way through. Dry clean if necessary.
Blood Use cold water immediately. Then launder as usual and add bleach if needed.
