item description
cutting board
A multi-functional must-have, to use for chopping everything from fruits and vegetables to meats. The white acrylic variety is best, although wood is also great. Make sure to wash it thoroughly after use with hot soapy water to remove any bacteria.
grater
Generally a hand-held tool made of stainless steel with holes of various shapes and sizes to shred everything from cheeses to nuts and vegetables.
ladle
A long handled utensil with a large rounded bottom, usually made of stainless steel, to use for serving soup or like food.
measuring cups & spoons
Smaller cups and spoons are used to measure dry ingredients, while liquids are best measured in glass measuring cups, such as ones made by Pyrex.
peeler
Tool with a curved and slotted blade usually made with stainless steel, and used to take the peel off of fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers and carrots. Also great to use in decoration for adding swirls of chocolate or lemon zest to a dessert.
plain spoon
A must-have, multi-use tool for the kitchen. Comes in a variety of shapes and materials, from wooden to non-stick plastic to stainless steel.
potato masher
A great tool to have on hand, particularly around holidays like Thanksgiving. Speeds up the process of mashing potatoes and other vegetables. Look for one made of stainless steel that has a sturdy handle.
rolling pin
Comes in two varieties, either with or without handles, and usually made of wood, or the higher-end version can come in marble. Use the handled pin to making pie dough, while the pin without handles is best for rolling out dough for bread or tortillas.
slotted spoon
Another all around item for the kitchen, again coming in either the non-stick or stainless steel variety. Great for everything from stirring to transferring food and straining liquids.
metal spatula
Used for everything from cooking (use the non-stick) to removing cookies from a cookie sheet. Another great everyday item.
rubber spatula
A multi-use tool, made with a smaller and more flexible head, for use in stirring batters, scraping bowls, or spreading icing on a cake.
tongs
Used to grasp hot or unweildy food, such as corn, or cooking meats.
whisk
Comes in a variety of shapes and sizes, usually made of stainless steel, for use in beating or mixing such things as egg whites, custards, sauces and gravy.
